HEAVEN’S GATE (1980) – THE MASTERPIECE THAT KILLED HOLLYWOOD

Fri 6 Nov • 7:30pm - 8:10pm

Experience Michael Cimino’s breathtaking Heaven’s Gate on the big screen. A legendary Western whose disastrous release nearly bankrupted a studio and helped bring the New Hollywood era to an end.

FILM + ALBUM SCREENING.

Join us for a rare screening of one of the most significant films in history, Michael Cimino’s HEAVEN’S GATE.

After directing his incredible first film (The Deer Hunter) became an instant classic and won five Oscars, Michael Cimino was given a blank check by a studio to make any film he liked. They didn’t expect it to be one of the most expensive, large-scale, and critically controversial films ever made – nearly bankrupting the studio in the process.

Focusing on a bloody feud in 1890s Wyoming, HEAVENS GATE is a film of extremes: one of the most breathtakingly beautiful films of all time, and one of the most financially disastrous ones too. The film has been dragged through the mud since its release, being cited as the catalyst to the end of the New Hollywood era where studios were giving young directors (like Scorsese, Coppola, and Cimino himself) the budgets and resources to execute their vision.

Love it or not, it is a legendary and infamous film and a must-watch for any cinephile.
