An iconic Camden landmark is entering a new chapter. Nearly 90 years after first opening its doors, the former ODEON Parkway is being reimagined as Plaza Camden — a new home for film, music, theatre, art and culture.

There are few buildings in Camden with quite as much history as the grand old cinema on The Parkway.

Since 1937, its doors have welcomed generations of film lovers, performers and local residents. Now, this much-loved landmark is beginning an exciting new chapter as Plaza Camden, a vibrant cultural and arts destination in the heart of Camden Town.

And while the name may be new, the spirit of the building remains very much alive.

A Camden Icon Since 1937

Originally opened as the Gaumont Palace Regent’s Park, the building was one of London’s great picture palaces, boasting an impressive 2,742 seats, an expansive auditorium and even its own theatre organ.

Over the decades, it has lived many lives. From the glamorous days of cinema to its time as the ODEON Parkway, the building has been a constant presence in Camden’s ever-changing cultural landscape.

It has even enjoyed a moment on the big screen itself, appearing as a Hamburg cinema in the 1994 Beatles film Backbeat.

Following the closure of the ODEON in February 2026, a new vision emerged — one that celebrates the building’s incredible heritage while creating something entirely new.

More Than a Cinema

Plaza Camden is not simply about bringing the movies back.

It’s about creating a destination where different worlds of culture and entertainment come together under one roof.

From classic film screenings and filmmaker Q&As to intimate theatre productions, comedy, live entertainment, DJ events and art, the venue aims to offer something for everyone.

By day, visitors can enjoy an independent café, meet friends, work, or simply take in the atmosphere of this remarkable building.

By evening, the space will transform to host performances, screenings and events that reflect Camden’s distinctive creative spirit.

And at the heart of the vision is a commitment to the local community, including plans for a free Sunday morning children’s film club for Camden families.

A Space for Everyone

Camden has always been a place where music, art and individuality thrive.

Plaza Camden aims to build on that legacy, creating a welcoming meeting place for local residents, artists, performers, businesses and visitors alike.

As co-founder Paul Saunders puts it:

“We are opening Camden’s living room, not another late-night bar.”

With spaces for private events, creative launches, corporate gatherings and cultural experiences, Plaza Camden also offers fresh possibilities for people looking to bring their own ideas to life.

The Next Chapter Starts Here

The original Gaumont Palace was built to bring people together. Almost nine decades later, that ambition remains unchanged.

The architecture, the memories and the magic of the building are all part of what makes Plaza Camden special.

Only now, there’s a whole new story to tell.

The lights are back on.
